The latest spawn in the wings

I spawned my opals together last weekend (12/3/05) and am excited to see what i get from them. The opals came from this spawn  spawn 05/10/04 stohmgrmskm-sugoldplkf

The parents of the current spawn are these

The father is a roundtail, the mother is a pale green metallic delta.

My object from this spawn is to find out what I get from it. As the father of the sire was a 16 ray OHM and the mother was a plakat, I was advised I would get plenty of veiltails and redwash on the juveniles. I go the redwash but they all carried the redloss gene so it dissapeared on all of them. I only got one male and he turned out to be a roundtail which is a very attractive rounded super delta tail.

I have been told that future spawns between siblings will eventually get back to the original parentage. This is what I will watch out for. In addition the opals (i self named them this) were very  popular and extremely pretty fish. They all had a gold or metalic green irridescence over them and were light bodied. The male above appears opaque but has a gorgeous green shimmer all over his body, very hard to capture on camera.

Its a tiny spawn but i will keep you all updated.

01/04/05 - There seems to be more in there than I originally thought. At first I thought less than 10 but there is definately more than that now. The mother of these babies was an absolutely huge baby herself and had to be jarred early. I have spotted another one that is a fair bit larger than the rest. I will have to keep an eye on it.

There will be no experiments on this spawn.. they are the experiment so im hoping most or all will make it to adulthood.

12/05/05 - I have jarred the largest, for a couple of weeks now and he/she is a beautiful irridescent blue or green not sure which. the others are now having growth spurts. As I have been busy in the past month I have not been concentrating on my fry's growth. This is another exciting trait of the Betta's. You can to a certain extent control their growth by the food and water you give them. As I have 2 spawns growing I will now concentrate on maturing this spawn. Im excited to see their colours. I intend keeping a few as they all carry the Red Loss gene which is fantastic for getting rid of redwash in bettas.

First Pics of the largest - note the green irridescence showing up.

18/06/05 - I have not had the best luck with these little fellas. Each time i have put a sibling in the barracks next to the fish pictured above.... she has killed them. I am not sure how they have got into her barrack but I am thinking they have jumped over or something, but the last 2 have been pure gold and gorgeous to look at. I have now started jarring them in separate tanks. I am trying to keep them separate from the jarred spawn below. Some have similar colourings but both spawns have completely separate parent lines.

And Yet another!!

Im hedging my bets here, Im tired of getting tiny spawns so I am in the process of spawning 2 from my spawn 15/11/04 stohmcgmskm-stmblusdf including the large green butterfly male. The female is a beautiful marble platinum rearing to go.

This will be my F2 from the original spawn. Hoping to get some coppers, platinums and metallic blues and greens. By the looks of the mother and father there might be marbles and butterflies.

Sire = Green mask butterfly Superdelta (more green than pic) Dam = Platinum Marble Super delta

14/04/05 - The spawn has happened. These two performed fantastic. They spawned within 24 hours, did not eat any eggs, did not rip each other to shreds and the sire is now looking after the newborns perfectly. They hatched last night and looks to be about 30. (Can you picture me down there with my magnifying glass). Anyways I am so excited about this spawn!!

12/05/05 - This spawn is going fine, There still seems to be about 30 all healthy and little. Nothing much to tell you except I will be concentrating on their growth from now on.

18/06/05 - The spawn has decreased to about 9. I have jarred 3. The largest being a male coloured green and red metallic. He is blowing bubbles like crazy. I have tried taking photos of him but none worthy of putting on the web. Another one that is jarred is definately metallic green but i am unsure what sex yet. And the final one that is jarred so far seems to be a platinum betta close to his/her mother's colouring.

2/07/05 - Oh joy my birthday, and these guys are going great guns. I have greens, blues, platinums and copper/gold. I am enjoying watching them colour up but unable so far to get a good picture. I think my camera is now deteriorating ( easy to blame) as I used to be able to get good pics close up.

I apologise for these photos.. even with the lend of a good camera they are still amiss. Those little buggers wont keep still. Just for your info the 2 pics of the blue metallic male are of the same fish.

So far a good proportion seem to be male. I am waiting a little longer before I am confident to say how many girls.

If you are interested in males they are pretty much ready to go.  The few females that I seem to have are reserved. There might be more females in the unjarred batch.

Just Thought i would show an updated pic of the first metallic male of the three above. I kept him and his colour is awesome although his tail never developed much more.
